Anfield Causes Earthquake: Sport And Noise Record Levels

seismological device for measuring earthquakes

Liverpool celebrated their stunning title-winning victory over Tottenham with a thumping 6-1 win over Spurs in considerable style – one that you might not expect!

Indeed, seismologists at the University of Liverpool were called into action, measuring the sound levels throughout the game, with the loudest being Alexis MacAllister’s strike that put the Reds’ in front, with this hitting 1.74 on the Richter scale.

Indeed, Callum Harrison, at the British Geological Survey revealed: “Seismic signals of this size have been observed at a number of concerts and sports fixtures over the past few years, including at Taylor Swift’s concerts last year.

“Whilst the energy released at these events can be comparable to a small earthquake, it is generated by the crowd jumping or dancing and not from the creation of actual earthquakes.”

The second largest during the match was for Mo Salah’s goal, measuring 1.60 – still somewhat significant, so it got us thinking about other occasions in sport when noise levels have had a substantial effect.

Arrowhead Stadium

It is perhaps easy to forget about US sports, though the NFL is actually responsible for some of the highest noise levels in sport – certainly against the biggest teams. Indeed, this was the case back in September 2014 at the Arrowhead Stadium as Kansas City Chiefs hosted the New England Patriots.

With a capacity of 76,000 and the stadium packed, it is officially the loudest outdoor crowd noise in sport that has ever been recorded with noise levels of 142.2 decibels.

Lumen Field

Again, NFL is in the record books, as the Seattle Seahawks hosted the New Orleans Saints in 2013 and did actually hold the record with Lumen Field’s capacity crowd of 68,000 hitting 137.6 decibels.

The interesting fact about Lumen Field actually, is that the design of the stadium and the materials used, helps to amplify the noise, which of course assisted in giving them the record in the first place.

Turk Telecom Stadium

Back in 2011, this held the record for the loudest noise level, with the match between Galatasaray and Fenerbahce – a major rivalry, reaching 131.76 decibels.

Boasting a capacity crowd of 52,000 at the time, it is believed that this is one of the fiercest stadiums in football, with animosity often hitting boiling point – especially for grudge matches. And, there is certainly no love lost between these two teams!

Celtic Park

It may not come as a surprise to some of you that Celtic Park is also mentioned, with the club’s Champions League tie against Barcelona back in 2012 responsible for noise levels of between 118 and 120 decibels.

Packed to capacity on the evening, the 60,000-strong crowd was said to create such an atmosphere that even Barcelona players noted it.
