Arsenal interested in 23-year-old German international

Unai Emery Arsenal

Since the arrival of Sven Mislintat to Arsenal from Dortmund, a few BVB players have been linked with the north Londoners. Sokratis Papastathopoulos left the Bundesliga club to move to the Emirates in the summer and now Julian Weigl is in the lime light.

According to renowned source SportBild, Arsenal are interested in the 23-year-old German international, who finds himself in a complex scenario.

Weigl regularly started for the Bundesliga side in the last campaign, however, in the current campaign, under the management of Lucien Favre, he has mainly warmed the bench. So far, in the league, the play breaker has only managed to play for 150 minutes in three appearances (Transfermarkt).

TFF’s view:

After 12 PL fixtures, Arsenal are fifth in the table with 24 points, 8 points behind league leaders Manchester City.

Emery surely needs to strengthen his squad in the winter transfer window but in our view, he does not need to sign a defensive midfielder at all.

In the current squad, the Spanish manager has got two quality holding midfield stars in the form of Swiss international Granit Xhaka and summer signing Lucas Torreira. The Uruguayan international has mainly played in the DM role this season and has impressed big time.

Moreover, Guendouzi has played in the defensive midfield role at times and Arsenal also have Egyptian international Elneny as backup in the squad. Therefore, Weigl is not needed and in all fairness, he is not good enough at the moment.

In our opinion, the Gunners do need to strengthen their creative midfield because they do not have depth in that area. Welsh star Aaron Ramsey will be out of contract next summer and he could leave the club in the winter transfer window. If that happens, then Emery must splash the cash to replace him by signing a creative CM in January.
