Arsene Wenger says he wouldn’t buy another Tottenham player for Arsenal

He’s come under a huge amount of pressure over the last few years, with some observers suggesting that he neglects the defensive areas of his team.

But, domestically at least, Arsenal are flying high and look closer to a title winning side than at any time over the last ten years.

And, with the North London derby to come on Sunday, the Arsenal boss gave an interesting insight into the continued rivalry between these two great clubs.

When asked his opinion on Harry Kane, and the potential for Arsenal to sign him one day he said:

“He has great qualities and he will make a great career. But once a player is at Spurs you don’t even consider him any more.”

This comment, made at his weekly press conference on Friday, will be read with differing reactions.

Some would see it as a sign that Wenger remains utterly loyal to the fans and tradition of Arsenal.

But the idea that he wouldn’t sign a player just because they come from Tottenham seems a little unambitious.

What if Gareth Bale had been open to a move to Arsenal when he left Tottenham for example? And where would Arsenal have been without the imperious leadership of Sol Campbell, who signed from Spurs in 2001.

Harry Kane may not be in that league but Wenger’s comments on this one may betray the lack of killer instinct that some believe is the achilles heel of the brilliant Frenchman.

We think that the goal should always be to improve the team, regardless of the context or history of the player.
