Bad Move?

Manchester United just had a year without any harmony at the club. Under David Moyes there were constant rumours of player dissatisfaction and general rumblings of discontent. It simply didn’t work. This was the wrong man for the job.

Just a week under Ryan Giggs has totally changed the atmosphere at Old Trafford. Manchester United once more resembles a happy place and the players have been beaming from ear to ear since Giggs became interim manager. The players and fans are right behind him and despite no silverware this season it’s party time at Manchester United once more.

Yet, despite all this, the Manchester United board look set to appoint Louis van Gaal as club manager. Can somebody explain this to me? Because it seems like total madness.

Reports over the last 24 hours have suggested that the Holland manager could cause all sorts of problems with players at Manchester United. The Telegraph reports:

Ferran Soriano, the Manchester City chief executive, says that Louis van Gaal, Manchester United’s manager-in-waiting, is “difficult and tough” and that “people don’t like him”.

The board seem petrified to appoint Ryan Giggs due to a lack of management experience. But when I looked at a dugout which consisted of Giggs, Butt, Scholes and Neville last weekend the term ‘inexperience’ certainly didn’t spring to mind.

What the club needs more anything is for the squad to all be pulling in the same direction. With Ryan Giggs at the helm everybody seems to be doing that and the team is once more playing the expansive, attacking football that the fans love. It’s only one game of course but we fully expect another convincing and front footed performance this weekend.

So the idea of bringing Louis van Gaal in seems like a move in the wrong direction. Manchester United have stopped the rot by sacking Moyes but they haven’t learnt the most crucial lesson from his tenure. That is the importance of man management and dressing room harmony.

What makes van Gaal so good anyway? His stats could just as easily damn him as compliment him. He last won The Champions League in 1995 and couldn’t manage it with either Barcelona or Bayern.

Whatsmore van Gaal, for all his trophies, is from the old school while Giggs is from the new – a modern man who totally understands the game and has the full respect of his players.

It just seems as if Manchester United are walking headlong into another nightmare scenario. It’s not too late – we truly believe that Manchester United should be bold and give the job to Ryan Giggs because the feelgood factor will only disintegrate if he doesn’t leave the club this summer.

Manchester United fans what do you think?
