Barcelona’s German head coach, Hansi Flick, is set to sign a contract extension with the Catalan giants, which would extend his stay with the Blaugrana until 2028, with the option of an extra year.

His current contract expires at the end of the 2026/27 season.

Flick has been a success at Barcelona

Despite failing to win the Champions League in his two seasons with the club, the German head coach’s tenure in Catalonia has been considered a success.

Flick arrived in the summer of 2024 as a replacement for club legend Xavi Hernandez. He guided Barcelona to the Spanish top-flight title, and with five La Liga games remaining, the Blaugrana are nine points clear of arch-rivals Real Madrid in the title race. Back-to-back La Liga titles would be a commendable achievement.

Reports suggest that Flick has impressed club president Joan Laporta and will be officially rewarded with the deal if, or when, Barcelona clinch the Spanish top-flight crown. Laporta has recently been re-elected as the club’s president, and has full confidence in the club’s 61-year-old.

Barcelona linked with summer transfer targets

Getting Flick committed to a contract extension is the start of what could be a busy summer at Barcelona. The Spanish media are linking the club to big moves in the transfer market, including a bid to sign Atletico Madrid and Argentina star Julian Alvarez.

However, the reigning Spanish champions are also reportedly interested in signing Yan Diomande, Bernardo Silva, Marc Cucurella and Denzel Dumfries.

Silva looks like one of the most realistic targets, as the Portuguese midfielder will be a free agent at the end of the season when his contract with Manchester City expires.

Dumfries is also a signing that would prove pretty straightforward, as the Inter full-back reportedly has a release clause of €25 million.

Diomande is regarded as one of the hottest properties in European football. However, his current club, RB Leipzig are set to offer him a new deal to ward off interest, at least for this summer.

Any potential move for Chelsea left-back Cucurella would be related to Alejandro Balde’s future. The young full-back has been linked with a £50m move to Champions League-bound Manchester United.
