Manchester United face a do-or-die contest against Wolfsburg in Champions League Match Day 6 at The Volkswagen Arena on Tuesday evening.
Anything less than a win will leave Manchester United in need of a favourable result in the other game in the group, where CSKA travel to PSV.
If The Dutch sides wins then Manchester United need all three points to qualify for the knockout phase having failed to take their chances against PSV at Old Trafford in the last round.
But veteran Germany international Bastian Schweinsteiger has seen it all before and had nothing but praise for his team mates ahead of a game which he must be relishing. He reserved particular commendations for the back line – one of the bright spots in a team which has failed to fire for much of the season.
In the press conference on Monday evening, the Manchester United midfielder said:
“We’re doing an unbelievable job defensively but we have to be determined to score. I’m convinced we can change it,”
“We keep creating chances, we need a little bit of luck to score.”
And in general he seemed relaxed and positive about the game in hand:
“There is no big pressure on us. We know we need to win – we can only think about beating Wolfsburg.
“We did it in Manchester and it won’t be easy but I am convinced that we will have a good game tomorrow.”
Under normal circumstances a side of Manchester United’s profile would be expected to get the right result on Tuesday night. But United haven’t been able to find top gear all season and they are far from their fluent best right now.
But Wolfsburg represents a game where the result is far more important than the performance. A smash and grab victory for The Reds will suit the Manchester United style council down to the ground on this occasion.
It’s all set up for a fantastic game of football.
