Can Anyone Stop Manchester City if Kevin De Bruyne signs?

De Bruyne: Master Creator

In the run up to the new season there was overwhelming support, from in and around football, for the notion that Chelsea would take a second successive title.

We were never so sure and, although we are now just a few days into the new season, we wonder whether Manchester City are already beginning to prove many wrong.

Because they were superb against a normally very difficult to beat West Bromwich Albion. Most teams would have been disheartened when that potential banana skin came out of the hat as the season opener.

But, despite a poor pre-season, Manchester City were the only team to really hit the ground running on the first weekend of the new campaign.

Manchester United, as is now becoming customary for them, spluttered to victory. Liverpool won courtesy of a last gasp wonder strike from Philippe Coutinho in an otherwise flat game.

Meanwhile 10 man Chelsea drew at home to Swansea, but were the poorer side before the sending off too. And Arsenal once more flattered to deceive with a home reverse against a buoyant West Ham.

It’s as crazy to predict the winner of the title one week in as it is at the start of the season.

But if Manchester City add the creative spark of Kevin de Bruyne to their wealth of attacking talent, they will offer a compelling argument for their third title in 5 seasons.

De Bruyne could be close to joining Manchester City, according to reports, and he was one of the most efficient players in Europe last season at Wolfsburg, with 16 goals and an almost absurd 27 assists in the campaign.

With Raheem Sterling’s eye-watering speed on one flank, De Bruyne cutting in off the other and Sergio Aguero feeding off the new, improved service, Manchester City will be frightening up top.

Yaya Toure looks back on song in the midfield with David Silva still able to wave his wand at will.

If Manchester City can tighten their, irrefutably strong, but inconsistent defence in the coming campaign – and that largely depends on the fitness of Vincent Kompany and the maturity of Eliaquim Mangala – then it’s hard to look past them for the title.

So The Football Freak is going against the grain on this one and backing City to be out in front come May.
