Liverpool football club was founded on June 3rd 1892, is one of the most famous clubs in the world and they play their football at Anfield in Merseyside.

The capacity of the stadium has recently been extended to 54,074. Liverpool were until recently the most successful club in English football. They were superseded, on a domestic level at least, by Manchester United, who won their twentieth league title in 2013.

Liverpool currently have 18 league titles but they are the most successful side in Europe of all the English sides as they have won the European Cup an incredible five times.

The most recent of those successes came in 2005 when Liverpool achieved a phenomenal victory against AC Milan. Three nil down at half time they fought their way back into the match in the second half and won the game in extra time with the almost superhuman Steven Gerrard pulling the strings.

This punctuated a period of moderate success for Liverpool who were by far and away the most successful English club throughout the 70s and 80s. They dominated the league and were just as successful in Europe at a time when they boasted the likes of Graham Souness, Kenny Dalglish, Kevin Keegan and a team replete with star names.

Liverpool have had several hugely successful managers in their history as well with the likes of Bob Paisley, Bill Shankly and Kenny Dalglish winning serial trophies for the club in that period of dominance.

One of Liverpool’s worst moments came in with the Heysel stadium tragedy in 1985 when which resulted in English clubs being banned from Europe. The Hillsborough disaster was another dreadfully unfortunate tragedy in an otherwise glorious history.

Liverpool have had some wonderful players but perhaps the most emblematic of those was Steven Gerrard who played for the club for over a decade and regularly dragged his team to victory almost single-handedly.

Gerrard was the main catalyst for victory in 2005 in the aforementioned Champions League final and he retired from Liverpool in 2015 after making 710 appearances for the club and scoring 186 goals. He went on to play Major League Soccer in America but there is a strong sense that his association with the club hasn’t ended and that he will one day come back to coach or manage Liverpool.

The current team is managed by German maestro Juergen Klopp who is trying to pull together a new vintage of Liverpool stars with a beautiful brand of attacking football. While the defence has been porous in the early part of his career as Liverpool manager the attack has been bewitching with the likes of Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino and Said Mane pulling the strings up top.

Overall Liverpool’s record is amazing – they’ve won 18 league titles, five European cups, seven FA Cups, eight league cups and they’ve also taken the Community Shield – the traditional curtain-raiser for the season which pits the league winners against the FA Cup holders – on 15 occasions. They have also won the UEFA cup – Europe’s second biggest club competition – three times and The European Super Cup on three occasions.

Liverpool’s top scorer of all time was the prolific Ian Rush who bagged 346 goals in 660 appearances for the club between 1980-1996.

Ian Callaghan is their record appearance holder to date with 857 games and 14 goals for The Reds in an eighteen year period between 1960-1978 in a highly successful career for Liverpool.

The Liverpool fans are also world famous not only for the noise which they generate from The Kop end of the ground, but also for their sporting and good spirited natures.
