Danny Welbeck becomes first player to play for Chelsea, Arsenal and Man United

Chelsea have agreed a deal to sign striker Danny Welbeck from Brighton & Hove Albion, in a move that marks a notable shift in the club’s transfer approach. The 35-year-old has been given permission to undergo a medical and is expected to sign a two-year contract, subject to its completion.

For several seasons, Chelsea have built one of the youngest squads in the Premier League and the club had not paid a fee for a player aged over 26 since signing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in 2022. Welbeck’s arrival breaks that pattern.

Adding Experience

Chelsea’s new head coach, Xabi Alonso, is understood to want more experience in his young group after a disappointing campaign and reports suggest Chelsea are also weighing up a move for 36-year-old midfielder Jordan Henderson. Welbeck has spent the last six years on the south coast, where he became one of Brighton’s most reliable forwards and, in time, their all-time leading Premier League goalscorer. Injuries troubled the earlier part of his career, but he has enjoyed a productive and consistent spell at the Amex Stadium.

The fee has not been disclosed, though it is understood to be modest. A former Manchester United and Arsenal forward and once a regular for England, Welbeck offers Chelsea a proven Premier League option and a steadying presence in a squad short of senior heads. Whether a 35-year-old is the right answer to Chelsea’s needs remains to be seen, but Alonso clearly values what he can offer on and off the pitch. The deal is not yet complete and Welbeck must first come through his medical before the move is confirmed. Should it go through, it will rank among the more unexpected signings of the summer.
