Chelsea fans will be delighted to hear that the club has agreed a deal to extend the contract of Cesar Azpilicueta.

The 27-year-old Spain international, who has made 18 appearances for his country since his debut in 2013, has been a virtual ever-present for Antonio Conte this season.

But, as well as his overall consistency, it’s his adaptability that makes him such a special and important player for Chelsea.

A right back by trade, the defender was moved to the left by Jose Mourinho and stayed there for two excellent seasons. Since Conte has come to the club Cesar has been moved inside into a three man defensive unit which is made up of Gary Cahill and David Luiz.

Chelsea’s official website confirmed the news by saying:

Cesar Azpilicueta has today signed a new three-and-a-half-year contract, keeping him at Chelsea until 2020.

The same source quotes the player as saying:

‘I’m really happy to have signed a new contract. Since I arrived here my target was to progress as a player and win trophies. This new contract gives me the chance to continue my relationship with the club, that’s what I wanted and obviously I’m really happy here.

‘We’ve had some really good moments so far this season. From day one, we started working very hard. We have a new manager with new ideas and I’m really happy to be working with him. Obviously we can still improve but the long-term aim for us is to win trophies, that is what we all want, the players, manager and fans.’

Be it at Osasuna, Marseille or Chelsea, Cesar has been Mr Consistency.

He is now in his fifth season at Stamford Bridge and is just one appearance shy of 200 games for the club. He’s hit a modest four goals in that time but his defensive work, as well as his ability to get forward and contribute quality balls into the box, makes him a stand out defender in the Premier League.

At just 27 TFF imagines that Azpilicueta could easily play for another five years for the club and become a true Chelsea legend.

Let’s see his best moments for the Blues last season.
