Do Arsenal really want Casillas now?

Despite the fact that Arsenal have spent a fair chunk of cash on David Ospina this summer there has also been talk about a move for Spanish legend Iker Casillas.

We are uncertain as to whether Arsenal will pursue their reported interest in Casillas now that they have signed such a good keeper.

And we wonder whether he would be worth the hassle anyway. A year ago many Arsenal fans would have bitten your hand off if you had offered them the chance to sign this highly accomplished goalkeeper. Having played 156 times for Spain, and been the undisputed number one at Real Madrid for over a decade, there would have been very little not to like about him.

And, of course, every player has a dip. But such has been the downward trajectory of Casillas’s form for club and country that you have to wonder whether this steep decline is terminal.

He was abject at The World Cup, conceding a couple of howlers and making some terrible decisions. He’s also lost his place in the Real Madrid side and, despite history telling us that players of this experience usually come back stronger, we think that the Spaniard’s head has gone.

At 33 he should still have lead in the pencil but we are now viewing this as a demise of Torres-esque proportions.

We truly hope that Casillas returns to his best. But we worry that his biggest battle is now in his head. And its a battle we fear that he is losing.

Arsenal fans: would you want Casillas at this stage?
