Is it the end for Manchester United stalwart?

Manchester United were pretty good on Thursday night weren’t they?

Let’s not pretend they were playing elite opposition but this, nevertheless, looked more like the Manchester United of old. They not only dominated possession but they did something with it. They were still a little short of their ruthless, vintage best. But this is a team which is definitely progressing.

One would imagine that there will still be many more changes to the squad before Jose Mourinho is finally happy. And one of the players who could well leave over the next couple of transfer windows is 30 cap England international Ashley Young.

TFF was never particularly impressed by him as a winger but, since he has become more of a utility man, it’s difficult to criticise his work ethic and abilities as a team player. He’s indefatigable and has a good football brain. Furthermore he has a great temperament and rarely goes public to complain about his peripheral position in the squad.

Recent reports suggest that the player could be on his way in January with several clubs in the Premier League interested.

Local newspaper, The Manchester Evening News, reported recently:

The 31-year-old is now being linked with a January transfer move away from Old Trafford, with former club Watford thought to be among the potential suitors for him.

His former side are said to have joined West Brom, Swansea and Everton in being keen on Young.

This one could go either way. Manchester United have an extremely deep squad already but Young is a player who can operate in at least 6 positions in the side.

Perhaps the crucial factor in determining his immediate future will be how Manchester United reinforce in terms of signings in January.
