Manchester United to offer big contract to forward – report

Love him or not Jesse Lingard has been favoured by both Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho when fit and he looks set to be rewarded for his progress by being offered a new deal at Manchester United.

With just 18 months to run on his current contract Manchester United have moved to seal off any potential outside interest in a player who, at 23, has now played 50 games and scored 8 goals for the club.

TFF still has grave reservations about whether Lingard has enough about his game to be part of a successful Manchester United XI over the next 5 years.

He’s not quick enough to be a conventional wide player who beats his man and get crosses in. And he doesn’t have the shooting ability or guile to chip in with enough goals to be a crucial part of the side. He’s neat and tidy but he doesn’t compare favourably to any of the great United wingers or forwards over the last 25 years.

As a local lad he is clearly popular with the Manchester United fans. But we wonder whether he would get into the starting XI at Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City or Arsenal. We are pretty sure he wouldn’t and that is where the bar is set right now.

Manchester United fans: give us your thoughts on Jesse Lingard. Is he a first XI player for a top team?
