Former Liverpool head coach Jurgen Klopp is in talks with the DFB to replace Julian Nagelsmann as Germany’s boss after the 38-year-old resigned from his role.
Nagelsmann quit after a poor World Cup showing
The highly rated Nagelsmann quit his job after Germany exited the World Cup in the last 32, following a penalty-kick defeat to Paraguay.
Germany arguably headed into the tournament with lower-than-usual expectations, but a last-32 exit was highly underwhelming.
Nagelsmann had been in charge of Germany in September, as he replaced Hansi Flick in the role. He managed the national team in 37 games, recording 23 wins, picking up 7 draws, and suffering 7 defeats.
Germany had won two of their three group games but suffered a 2-1 defeat in their third, sending them into the knockout stages in a low mood.
Klopp admits he’s in talks with DFB
The DFB moved quickly to find a replacement for Nagelsmann. Speaking to the German media, Klopp revealed that they have been in touch about the role. The 59-year-old is believed to be highly keen on taking the role, and he is the first choice to replace Nagelsmann.
Klopp has been out of coaching since leaving as Liverpool head coach in the summer of 2024. The 59-year-old has been working as the head of global football for the Red Bull Group, overseeing their plethora of clubs.
Klopp the man to revive Germany’s fortunes
It was always inevitable that Klopp would return to coaching at some stage. A return to Liverpool had been mooted by some when the Reds dispensed with the services of Dutch head coach Arne Slot.
Nothing came of that link, with Liverpool appointing highly-rated Spanish boss Andoni Iraola. However, the timing could be ideal for Klopp, who is likely itching to get back in the dugout.
The German national team is in serious need of inspiration, and Klopp could be just the man to help improve their fortunes after underwhelming performances and results in the recent major international tournaments.
