Liverpool confident on signing EPL star and closing in on £25m deal – reports

It will be music to the ears of many Liverpool fans to hear that the club is finally looking to address its dodgy defence.

Because while the Reds have been regularly bewitching in attack this season, their good work going forward is too often undone by a porous back line.

A goalkeeper would be top of TFF’s list of acquisitions this summer but Liverpool are reportedly targeting a couple of top centre backs according to the latest rumours in the British media.

The Mirror reports:

Liverpool closing in on £25million capture of Burnley defender Michael Keane

The report states that Keane is Jurgen Klopp’s top defensive target this summer and that Liverpool are confident of sealing a deal for the 25-year-old. Keane has been a stalwart for Burnley since he left Manchester United two years ago. He’s been a first team regular and forced his way into the England side. Keane is a solid and composed defender with good aerial ability and who provides real threat in the opposition penalty area. He’s a better defender than Liverpool currently possess.

Meanwhile The Daily Star suggests:

Liverpool confident of securing £50m deal for Premier League ace

Sensationalism? Perhaps. Liverpool have never got close to spending 50m GBP on one player, let alone a defender.

Furthermore, the report states that Southampton manager Claude Puel wants to hold on to the player beyond the summer. This doesn’t seem particularly realistic given the apparent competition for the signature of one of the top performers in the league this season.

Van Dijk has been a sensation since he moved to The Saints from Celtic a couple of years ago. He was bought to replace Toby Alderweireld but has arguably been even better. He’s a towering defender who would be a superb addition to the Liverpool first XI and add authority and composure.

Liverpool fans: is it realistic to suggest that the club will shell out this much cash for a defender?
