Liverpool Podcasters Troll Manchester United with New Sign

Anfield Wrap Man Utd Billboard

Rivalries are one of the best parts of football, which is why when someone does something extra special it is worthy of our attention.

Elsewhere on the site, for example, we’ve written about the Everton supporter who had some fun at Liverpool’s expense by putting red wrapping around some blue flares ahead of the club’s title-winning match against Tottenham Hotspur.

Now a group of Liverpool supporters have had their own fun by putting up a sign outside Old Trafford that draws attention to the fact that the Merseyside club is the most successful in England.

What’s the Story Behind the Billboard?

A Liverpool podcast company, The Anfield Wrap, has paid for billboards close to Old Trafford to be adorned with a sign that says the following:

“Manchester, just 37 miles to the country’s most successful football club.”

The billboard sign also features the podcast’s branding of TAW. When Liverpool were confirmed as champions thanks to their 5-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur, it meant that the Reds picked up their 20th top-flight title. That drew them level with Manchester United for the record number of titles, but the Merseyside club had more major trophies overall.

The following is the side-by-side comparison of what the two teams have won:

Competition Liverpool Wins Manchester United Wins
English Top-Flight League 20 20
European Cups / Champions League 6 3
FA Cup 8 13
League Cup 10 6
UEFA Cup / Europa League 3 1
UEFA Super Cup 4 1
FIFA Club World Cup 1 1
Total 52 45

Even if you were to remove the Super Cup and the Club World Cup, with some people considering those to be little more than friendly competitions the equivalent of the Community Shield, Liverpool would still have 47 major trophies compared to Manchester United’s 43.

It was the title that United supporters used to hold on to as being their major bragging point, often singing ’20 times, 20 times Man United’, but now that has been removed from their arsenal of things to banter Liverpool fans with.

What is The Anfield Wrap?

Sometimes referred to simply as ‘TAW’, The Anfield Wrap was created in 2011 as a podcast looking at Liverpool Football Club. In the years since then, the organisation has gone on to offer videocasts and live shows, as well as a website that regularly produces top-class articles on all things LFC.

It is fan media, but many of the shows produced are considered by those that subscribe to be of broadcast quality. The main host, Neil Atkinson, as well as many of the other contributors, regularly appear on the likes of the BBC and Sky Sports as well as other broadcasters.

There are numerous different shows produced by the company, including a main show that looks at the Liverpool match, The Gutter, which is about transfer news and What Football Means to Me, hosted by a contributor called Adam Smith and interviewing people about their football supporting journey.

Some of the people that have featured on that show include the actor Will Arnett, comedian Alex Horne and actor/writer Robbie O’Neill. Countless former Liverpool players and managers have also appeared on podcasts, including Rafa Benítez, Jamie Carragher and Kenny Dalglish.

It Hasn’t Gone Down Well with Some

As you can imagine, the fact that the sign is so close to Old Trafford means that some people have not reacted well to the sign’s presence in Manchester. Located along the A56, drone footage of the sign posted online shows the Manchester United home stadium in the background of the billboard.

The company posted a message to its Twitter account with footage of the sign saying, “A message for Manchester…and we’re never gonna stop.” The replies from some were what you might describe as ‘salty’, adopting the standard vitriol you might have come to expect from the site.

It certainly hasn’t helped the mood of Manchester United supporters, who have had to endure watching the team’s worst ever Premier League season. They ended the season with a measly 42 points and no European football next season.

That glimmer of hope for the Red Devils was extinguished when they played Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final. A win would have allowed them to play in the Champions League in the 2025-2026 campaign, but they lost 1-0, despite probably being the better team on the night.

Even Gary Neville has admitted that The Anfield Wrap’s sign is right, however, and the Merseyside club are the more successful of the two.
