Liverpool reportedly make contact with Carlo Ancelotti about the manager’s position

Is the end nigh for Brendan Rodgers at Liverpool?

Well, if reports today are to be believed, his position as head coach is very much on the line.

The Daily Mail writes:

Brendan Rodgers is fighting to save his Liverpool job after owners FSG sounded out Carlo Ancelotti about replacing him as manager.

It is understood Rodgers retains the support of some decision-makers at Liverpool, but his job is now hanging by a thread after Ancelotti was contacted about his position.

The sense that we have is that a really good run of results may still save Rodgers.

He did, after all, get the keys to the transfer kitty over the summer and once more made a raft of signings.

But, after four seasons at the club, it’s difficult to argue that the situation at the club has markedly improved.

Rodgers has been forced to sell Luis Suarez and Raheem Sterling, while the legendary Liverpool hero Steven Gerrard has moved to America.

Any club would struggle to deal with the loss of these players.

On the other hand, Rodgers has rarely bought top class players in and has had a big budget to do so.

As well as his transfer policy, his tactics have been questioned and he has chopped and changed his formation regularly since he took the hot seat.

Some may call the position a poisoned chalice for a club living on memories of past glories.

But you only need to look at the job that Ronald Koeman is doing at Southampton, for example, to see that Liverpool aren’t optimising their resources right now.

While too many clubs sack their managers prematurely we think that Rodgers has been given ample time in the post and Liverpool look no closer to winning the title now than they did ten years ago.

Carlo Ancelotti is a top tier manager who would surely get more out of this Liverpool squad and set them on the right course again.
