Manchester United confirm deal for Luke Shaw

So, in the space of just 24 hours, Manchester United have stolen a march on their title rivals by doing the best business of the transfer window so far.

Liverpool have signed Emre Can and Ricky Lambert. Chelsea have so far confirmed the signing of Cesc Fabregas. And Manchester City have brought in Fernando.

But Manchester United have brought in two players who may just write their names in the hall of fame at their new club.

At 24 years of age Ander Herrera looks like a super buy – his guile and energy is much needed in the Manchester United midfield.

But the standout signing is that of 18-year-old Southampton full-back Luke Shaw. He already looks as good as any other left-sided player in The Premier league but has his entire career ahead of him. God only knows how good he will become by the age of 25.

In a statement on their official website Manchester United confirmed the deal this afternoon:

Manchester United is delighted to announce the signing of Luke Shaw from Southampton Football Club. He joins on a four-year contract with an option to extend for a further year.

And the player himself is clearly ecstatic to be joining the club:

“I am thrilled and excited to be joining Manchester United. I have been at Southampton since I was eight years old and I would like to thank them and the fans for everything they have done for me. I want to continue to progress my career and joining United is the ideal place for me to do that. I am looking forward to this new chapter in my life and also looking forward to learning from the world-class players and management at the club.”
