Defensive Jose? Manchester United keen on another top playmaker – report

TFF definitely believes that you should take this one with a pinch of salt. But don’t shoot the messenger.

Because latest reports in France suggest that Manchester United are now trying to snare yet another top playmaker.

Sky Sports News translates this one for us:

Manchester United are planning a summer swoop for West Ham midfielder Dimitri Payet, according to reports in France Football.

Dmitri Payet is obviously a lovely footballer and one of the few genuine bright spots of an underwhelming EURO 2016.

But where on earth would he play for Manchester United?

At 29 he is going to want weekly football and his best position is arguably at number 10. But even if Juan Mata leaves the club this summer, Manchester United still have captain Wayne Rooney, Ander Herrera and Marouane Fellaini who would all possibly describe the hole as their most effective spot.

Payet can also play either side but Manchester United are surely going to use Anthony Martial and Henrikh Mkhitaryan as their main wide men.

If there is any substance to this tale then it further flies in the face of the idea that Jose Mourinho is a defensive coach. Because although United’s defence has been regularly criticised over the last two years, Mourinho has spent the summer stockpiling attackers with just one, relatively unknown, defensive addition so far.

That said, TFF just can’t see this one happening.

Manchester United supporters: do you think that there is any mileage at all in this rumour?
