And Memphis Depay could well be on a similar trajectory. He quickened pulses when he joined Manchester United and scored a few goals. But his head has clearly gone down of late and only the more optimistic United fans now see him as a player who can make the first-team long-term.

It’s a real shame because he has all the physical attributes to be a top pro. He’s lightning quick but also strong as an ox and has great feet. But he simply doesn’t appear to have the football brain to match right now.

And that’s why he’s increasingly being linked with a move away from Manchester United.

Everton now look to be serious suitors and British media outlet, The Daily Mirror, reckons that Ronald Koeman could make a move:

Depay has only figured in four Premier League games this season and all of those came off the bench. If anything he has played least as the season has progressed and has down little to alert Jose Mourinho to his qualities.

The 22-year-old joined Manchester United for £25m at the start of last season and has made 52 appearances for the club, scoring 7 goals. Everton would be getting a player who could be a world-beater if he finds consistency and maturity.

The big question is whether that point will ever come.
