Manchester United are reportedly stepping up their interest in Real Madrid centre-back Raphael Varane. The 23-year-old has been marginalised this season and may feel that the time is right to move on, as British media outlet Talksport says:
Manchester United intensify their pursuit of Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane
Varane has figured 32 times for Real Madrid this season and is still highly regarded. But he has been overlooked for most of the biggest European games and rumours about his immediate future are beginning to intensify once more.
Jose Mourinho is known to be a huge admirer of a player who he managed at Madrid and was quoted in 2014 as saying:
‘I think he is the best young central defender in the world. Already I think he’s the best.’
And Jose has been linked with a move for the player if he does become Manchester United manager in the summer.
Varane has been capped 28 times by France and some view him as the successor to Rio Ferdinand with his pace, athleticism, touch and wonderful reading of the game. Quite why he hasn’t been given a more central role at Real Madrid is baffling and he may begin to wonder if he is ever going to become the stalwart of the Real defence having been at the club since 2011.
Here are some of his better moments. Manchester United fans: would he be the perfect partner for Chris Smalling next season or would you rather opt for a player like John Stones?
