Manchester United target Ilkay Gundogan signs a new contract with Dortmund

The summer looks as if it will be a crazy period for Manchester United as they attempt to return to the top of the table come next season.

But one player who won’t be coming to Manchester United this summer is Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gundogan.

Reports suggest that the player has committed to a new deal with the German club which will see him stay at Dortmund for the foreseeable future. The Daily Mail reports:

Midfielder Ilkay Gundogan has committed his future to Borussia Dortmund by signing a new contract.

The highly-rated Germany international, a reported target for a host of clubs across Europe, including Manchester United, has penned a new deal to keep him at the Bundesliga club until 2016.

Gundogan told the club’s official website: ‘I am very grateful that my club gives me the opportunity to continue to be part of this

The 23-year-old hasn’t played much this season due to back problems but it was his performance levels in the campaign the year before which generated interest from all around Europe.

So Manchester United will have to look elsewhere for midfield talent this summer. But perhaps not too far, as Manchester United have also been linked with a bid for Gundogan’s team mate Marco Reus.

Reus is more of an attacking midfielder than the box to box Gundogan and may provide the sort of goal volume which Manchester United has been desperately lacking since players like Paul Scholes departed the scene.
