Manchester United target will be allowed to leave for right price

Manchester United target Jose Fonte will be allowed to leave Southampton if they receive a bid in excess of £5m, according to reports in Portugal.

The Saints have told Fonte they will let him leave if they receive a bid over £5m. (MaisFutbol – in Portuguese)

Manchester United have been without two of their first choice defenders in Chris Smalling and Eric Bailly for over a month and Fonte has often been linked with a move to Manchester United. Latest reports state that he has turned down an offer of an extended contract at Southampton.

But Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo have proved to be excellent understudies and will be seriously competing for places in the team even when the injured return.

So perhaps the need for another centre back is not as great as it was perceived to be a couple of months ago.

But Fonte is an excellent all-rounder. He’s big and powerful in the air. But he also has lovely feet and plays a cool one-touch game with real composure.

The 32-year-old has played 20 times for Portugal after making a debut in 2014, relatively late in his career. He’s played 282 times for Southampton and scored 15 goals since his move in 2010.

Let’s see some of the best moments for club and country.

Manchester United fans – is now the time to move for Fonte or do United have enough cover in this areas?
