So it looks as if there will be some intrigue for Manchester Untied fans on the last day of the transfer window after all.
With four major signings done relatively early it seemed as if the last weeks of the window would be solely about who Manchester United allowed to leave the club.
But The Manchester Evening News suggests that another signing could go right down to the wire. They say:
Fonte would be Mourinho’s fifth summer signing but any deal will depend on Southampton softening their stance on the 32-year-old. It is understood United are willing to wait until deadline day in a bid to test their resolve.
The 32-year-old has been a late bloomer and was imperious for Portugal as the EURO 2016 tournament wore on. He only made his debut for his country in 2014 but is now something of a stalwart.
The player is said by the source to be valued at £8m which seems reasonable for a player of this standard.
Now, far be it for TFF to question Jose Mourinho.
But we aren’t convinced that Manchester United need him.
The current central defensive roster already looks so strong despite its youthful average age.
The current pairing of Bailly and Blind is a little raw but showing great promise. The balance afforded by the pace and aggression of Bailly and the artful class of Blind seems excellent.
Then you have Chris Smalling – easily one of the best Manchester United performers last season.
And TFF is still of the opinion that Phil Jones can be a top player, if he finally gets an injury free run in the team.
Add the likes of Timothy Fosu-Mensah, Marcos Rojo and the emergency services of Michael Carrick and we think that Manchester United have more than enough quality in that area of the park.
