Respected Source: Manchester United want another summer signing

Manchester United are keen to bring Southampton defender Jose Fonte to Old Trafford this summer according the highly respected British media outlet, The Guardian.

The 32-year-old has been strongly linked with a move north over the last two weeks and it appears ever more likely that there is serious substance to the rumour.

They say:

Manchester United’s José Mourinho wants to buy Southampton’s José Fonte

The theory is that, while Manchester United have strength in depth in the central defensive positions they lack real experience there, with Chris Smalling the oldest of the bunch at 26.

Fonte is something of a late developer who didn’t make his debut for Portugal until 2014. But he had a big influence on EURO 2016 and played more minutes as the tournament progressed.

He’s been a revelation at Southampton and is coolness personified on the ball.

One would imagine that he could give two more years to top level football and with the energy of Eric Bailly beside him he could command the back line imperiously.

Fonte has played 7 whole seasons for The Saints and notched up 267 appearances and scored 15 goals there. That’s over half of his entire career club matches.

If Fonte does arrive at Manchester United over the next week – and it’s hard to imagine the player turning down a move to such a club for his swansong – then the club will have brought half a team of new players in what has been a remarkable transfer window for Jose Mourinho.
