It all started in such promising fashion for Memphis Depay at Manchester United. But the current number seven has flailed badly in his 18 months at the club and there is now constant speculation that he will leave Old Trafford in January. TFF looks at possible replacements for the sacred number seven jersey.
James Rodriguez
Like Depay he hasn’t always been at his consistent best in the colors of Los Blancos. But this is a player who regularly defies physics with his football skills and he would most probably relish the challenge of being Manchester United’s next number seven – and a very exciting one at that.
Marco Reus
TFF has long been of the opinion that Manchester United would struggle to find a better winger than the brilliant Marco Reus. We do feel that he has one more big move in him in his career and, at 28 years of age, it’s now or never. Injuries have prevented him from being the world star that he should be but his stats are incredible and he is a top level player.
Antoine Griezmann
He’s more of a centre forward these days but he started out on the wing and he probably wouldn’t complain if he was given the number seven shirt at Manchester United. Recent reports have suggested that the club is prepared to break the bank in order to trigger the release clause of the player. He is one of those who you feel would be a guaranteed success at Old Trafford.
Alexis Sanchez
It’s a long shot of course, but with just 18 months of his contract left to run Manchester United could definitely afford to sign the player. And it’s difficult to argue with the notion that they would want him if a deal as possible. He’s got pace, finesse and power and also scores bucket loads of goals. He would be a wonderful signing for the club.
Henrikh Mkhitaryan
Manchester United could decide to promote from within and who better, on current form, to give the hallowed number seven jersey to than the brilliant Armenian Henrihkh Mkhitaryan?
They were genuine concerns in the first few months of his United career that he wouldn’t make the grade. But he’s become not only one of the most dangerous forwards in the Premier League but also has that wonderful and requisite element of fantasy to his game.
