Newcastle make late bid – report

Newcastle have seemed likely to do some business in the January window and perhaps we shouldn’t discount a final day move for a pacy addition.

Latest reports suggest that an offer has been made for an exciting young forward who is currently plying his trade in France.

The Daily Mail reports:

Newcastle United have made an offer for Angers striker Nicola Pepe.

The 21-year-old is nominally a winger but has the pace and technique to play in several positions in the front line. At 5ft 10in he’s got great acceleration and has frightened many a French defence this season.

He was born in France to descendants of the Ivory Coast and elected to play for the African nation when selected in November 2016 to represent them against who else but France.

He made his way up through the ranks at Angers before having a breakthrough season in 2013. But he really made a splash when on loan at Orleans last season with seven goals and 29 thrilling appearances for the French side.

Newcastle obviously wouldn’t be getting the finished product here but they may be signing a gem. With the Andros Townsend deal still not done, Newcastle may see Pepe as a cheaper option to add some genuine pace to the front line for the second half of the campaign and that crucial push for the Premier League.

Pepe may not start too many games but he could be an excellent weapon off the bench in the last 20-30 minutes when opposition legs are tiring.

Newcastle fans: an exciting alternative to Townsend?
