Premier League clubs make move for Arda Turan with Liverpool and Manchester United linked

You might think us completely mad to suggest that Arda Turan wouldn’t be a good signing for Manchester United.

At 28 he’s regarded as one of the better midfielders in Europe and is as skillful going forward as most. He also scores important goals for Atletico. We remember one in particular, which knocked the stuffing out of Chelsea in The Champions League, two years ago.

And The Independent reports today that Manchester United are being linked with a move for the Turkish international after his agent publicly stated that the player wants to come to The Premier League:

Arda Turan ‘in talks with three Premier League clubs’ – Manchester United and Liverpool strongly linked

“His intention is to leave Spain this summer,” Turan’s agent Ahmet Bulut told Spanish sports newspaper AS.

“His will is to leave and to play in the Premier League, that is the path he would like to take to continue his career.

Turan would of course represent a decent signing.

But, at 29 in January, we still think that this move would be reflective of an unhealthy new trend in the transfer policy at Manchester United. Yes, United made a lot of unforced errors last campaign; silly mistakes which seasoned internationals shouldn’t be making.

But let’s not forget that Manchester United are not short of experience. In Victor Valdes, Antonio Valencia, Ashley Young, Wayne Rooney, Juan Mata and Michael Carrick they have bags of it.

We believe that what the team requires is more energy. Louis needs to put some tireless legs around his seasoned stars. He started well this summer by investing in the explosive Memphis Depay.

But, since then, Manchester United have been strongly linked with a raft of golden oldies like Ramos, Schweinsteiger, Cech and now Turan.

Ok, 28 isn’t exactly ancient. But wouldn’t it be better to continue buying players in their early to mid twenties who can form a long lasting foundation for the side, rather than spending huge amounts on players who may already be on the decline?

We will surely be in the minority with our thoughts on Turan. He is a world class player in his prime. But for how long? And how many hundreds of thousands of pounds will this guy cost to pay each month? How many millions to sign?

Let’s have the opinions of Manchester United fans on this one.
