Real Madrid have completed the signing of Yan Diomandé from RB Leipzig in a deal that could rise to £120 million, making the Ivory Coast international the most expensive African player in history. The 19-year-old winger has signed a seven-year contract at the Bernabéu after Real agreed a fee with the German club, with add-ons that would push the final figure past the £115 million they paid Borussia Dortmund for Jude Bellingham in 2023.
The move ends interest from Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain, both of whom had opening bids rejected before withdrawing from the race in recent weeks when the price seemed to get higher and higher.
Diomandé Rounds Off a Busy Summer Under Mourinho
Diomandé becomes Real’s sixth summer signing under new head coach José Mourinho, following Bernardo Silva, Ibrahima Konaté, Denzel Dumfries, Marc Cucurella and Carlos Espí through the door at the Bernabéu. He scored 13 goals and provided ten assists in all competitions last season for Leipzig, having joined the club from Leganés in 2025, and was named the Bundesliga’s Young Player of the Season for his efforts.

He also started all four of Ivory Coast’s matches at this year’s World Cup, where they were eliminated in the round of 32 by Norway. Real see him as a long-term answer to their search for consistency on the right wing, with the Ivorian equally comfortable cutting inside from the left. Whether the explosive Mourinho will last long enough to see that happen isn’t yet clear.
It could be argued that paying such a fee for a teenager, even one as gifted as Diomandé, is a considerable gamble so soon after the outlay on Espí and Cucurella this summer. Real’s transfer business under Mourinho and President Florentino Pérez has instead followed a clear pattern of paying for potential rather than the finished article, much as they did with Bellingham three years ago.
It seems more likely that Real see Diomandé’s versatility, pace and end product as reason enough to make him their fourth-most-expensive signing in history. Diomandé himself called the move a childhood dream and told Leipzig supporters in a statement, “Who knows? Maybe we’ll meet again one day in the Champions League.”
Real now turn their attention to a pre-season friendly against Ferencváros, the first chance for Mourinho to run the rule over his newest arrival.
