Portugal head coach Roberto Martinez has named his Portugal squad for this summer’s World Cup in Canada, Mexico and the USA.

Unsurprisingly, veteran superstar Cristiano Ronaldo will be with the Selecao this summer.

Squad Has A Strong Premier League Influence

The Portugal squad will have a strong Premier League influence at the World Cup.  Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, Jose Sa, Diogo Dalot, Matheus Nunes, Ruben Dias and Pedro Neto all confirmed in the 26-man squad.

Former Premier League players Nelson Semedo, Joao Cancelo, Ruben Neves, Joao Felix and Goncalo Guedes have all featured in the English top flight.

However, the squad also includes three players from European champions PSG, including Vitinha, Joao Neves, and Nuno Mendes, who have all played big roles in the Parisians’ success over the last few seasons.

Ronaldo Set for Sixth World Cup Appearance

At the age of 41, another former Premier League star, Cristiano Ronaldo, will be appearing at his sixth World Cup this summer. The former Real Madrid star will make history if he appears in the competition, as no player has ever played in six World Cup finals.

However, arch-rival Argentina’s Lionel Messi is also in line to feature at the World Cup for a sixth time, if he is included in the Albiceleste squad. The former Barcelona star also holds the record for the most World Cup appearances, with 26.

Ronaldo has made just four fewer World Cup appearances, though, and is fifth on the list of all-time appearances.

Ronaldo made his World Cup debut in 2006. However, Portugal has never progressed beyond the semi-finals of the competition, with their last appearance in the last four coming in Ronaldo’s debut campaign, when they were defeated by hosts Germany.

Despite his advancing years, at club level, Ronaldo has remained prolific in front of goal in the Saudi Pro League with Al-Nassr, scoring 26 goals in 29 appearances.

The veteran forward will be hoping to make more history this summer by being part of Portugal’s first World Cup-winning team.
