Sunderland want international captain – report

It appears that Gus Poyet and Sunderland are wasting little to no time in the transfer market this summer and reports today suggest that the club has made a bid for the excellent Swansea centre back Ashley Williams.

Sunderland make £4million bid for Swansea’s Ashley Williams

Wales international is a priority transfer target for Gus Poyet, who is are also tempted to make an offer for Cardiff City midfielder Jordon Mutch

Even though the Wales captain has online year left on his contract this price still seems on the cheap side for such an accomplished and solid player in his peak years.

At the age of 29 we think that he would make a good squad member for most teams in The Premier League and if Sunderland do get him it will be an absolute bargain as far as we are concerned.

But we think that Swansea will try to hold on for a little longer yet to see if anyone else enter the bidding. There were reports last summer that Arsenal were interested and we don’t think that Sunderland will be the only suitor this time around.

John O’Shea and Wes Brown have done a decent job in the heart of the defence for Sunderland over the last couple of years but Ashley Williams would potentially take them up a level in terms of physicality and power.

Let’s see some of his highlights. Sunderland fans would this be a great bit of business?
