Tottenham Hotspur has signed Italian international midfielder Sandro Tonali for an initial club-record fee of around £92.5m, with a potential of £7.5m in add-ons. Tonali has signed a six-year deal with the north London club.

Tonali is leaving Newcastle after three seasons

The 26-year-old is leaving the Magpies after three seasons with the north east outfit. He joined Newcastle in 2023 from AC Milan in a deal reported to be worth around £65m.

The midfielder made 110 appearances for United in all competitions, scoring ten goals. That tally of games would have been higher had Tonali not been banned from playing for ten months related to sports betting activity in October 2023.

He returned to football in August 2024 and played in most of Newcastle’s games in season 2024/25. After his return, Tonali helped inspire the north east team to their first trophy in 70 years, as they lifted the League Cup in 2025.

Tottenham’s rebuild going strong

Spurs were determined to avoid another relegation scrap in season 2026/27, so have taken steps to rebuild their squad this summer.

Tonali followed fellow midfielder Mateus Fernandes to the club, as the young Portuguese midfielder had joined recently for a fee of around £85m, which was then a record.

However, they were not the first players to join the north London club this summer, as Spurs had already signed defenders Marcos Senesi and Andy Robertson, as well as goalkeeper Martin Dubravka on free transfers.

Another blow to Newcastle

Following on from the summer loss of England winger Anthony Gordon to Barcelona, they have now lost a key a player in Tonali. The Magpies will have to reinvest the money wisely to progress.
