Manchester United are stalling on offering interim boss Michael Carrick the job on a permanent basis. The decision won’t be made until the end of the season when the club’s status is clearer.

Carrick has turned the team’s form around

Michael Carrick took the job in the middle of January and helped the team produce an incredible turnaround in form. In fact, since the former Boro boss’s arrival at the club, no team has picked up more points than the Red Devils.

His impact has been so great that United are third in the Premier League table and well-positioned to clinch a Champions League spot. This, after an underwhelming start to the campaign under highly rated Portuguese boss Ruben Amorim.

The former Sporting boss is regarded as a clever tactician, but in truth, he struggled to get his ideas across to his players, leading to poor performances. Carrick has gone back to basics, and it has helped his team shoot up the table.

His knowledge of the club from his 12 years as a United player has helped him settle into the role, as he is familiar with the club’s ethos.

Future still up in the air

Carrick held talks with United’s majority shareholder, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, on Monday at the club’s training ground. However, his future is still up in the air. Whether Carrick’s appointment hinges on the team’s qualification for the Champions League or not is unclear.

Failing to qualify for Europe’s elite competition would surely mean an exit for Carrick at the end of the season. However, that seems unlikely given their current position in the table.

If it’s decided that Carrick isn’t right for the job, his performance this season as interim United boss will have illustrated his managerial acumen to other clubs who are looking for their next head coach.
