In the sport of football, there are numerous different phrases that tend to stand out above others. If you don’t know much about the sport or have only just started to get into it recently, it can feel as though someone is speaking a foreign language when you hear some of the phrases that are used.
One such example is ‘on the beach’, which some might well confuse with the fact that beach football is an actual variation that exists in association football.
Whilst it obviously could be used to reference such a sport, the reality is that ‘on the beach’ is a much more critical term when it’s used in certain circumstances.
Towards the End of the Season
Football seasons are long. Regardless of the country in which the sport is being played, there comes a point at which the players have very little to play for. It might well be that they’ve already won the league with several games left to play, for example, or it could be that they know that they are safe from relegation and are also unlikely to make it any higher in the league, therefore making their matches virtually pointless.
Although divisions such as the Premier League sees teams paid more money depending on where they finish, most players won’t really care about that.

Instead, they are already mentally ‘on the beach’ by the time the game is being played, meaning that they don’t put in anywhere near as much effort as they would if the game actually meant something.
Think about it: your team is 12th in the table, well above the relegation zone and nowhere near the European places, with just three games left in the campaign. The effort that the players put in for those three games isn’t going to be anywhere near what they would do if they were playing in a cup final, say, or if it was a derby game against another team based locally.
Instead, the players are mentally checked out, fearing picking up an injury that might see them missing out on a summer tournament such as the World Cup, or else having to spend the period in between seasons on the treatment table.
A team that is ‘on the beach’ will be easier to play against than one that actually has something to play for, which is why it can be a pain for your opponents for a league title or if you are looking to avoid relegation to be playing against a team on the beach whilst you’re playing someone that’s still got plenty left to play for and wants to give it their all.
