Wrong decision for Giggs to retire?

It looks like it’s going to be the busiest summer for Manchester United in many years..

You could name a whole team of players who could leave the club after having underperformed for at least a season now.

One man whose future is now certain is Ryan Giggs. Having met new manager Louis van Gaal Giggs has decided to retire as a player and join the Dutchman’s coaching staff as number 2.

Many think that he is good enough to manage Manchester United right now. Others believe he needs more time and experience to learn the role.

By staying on at Manchester United beyond the end of this season he will learn a huge amount from another managerial legend of the game.

But we believe that Giggs was hasty in announcing his retirement as a player at Manchester United. That may sound ridiculous for a forty year old man.

But, as we saw this season, he can still give you some absolutely diamond cameos for 15 or 20 games per season. Still fit as a fiddle his quality on the ball remains superior to most of his team mates.

Even if only used as an emergency player Giggs could be invaluable to Manchester United on the pitch next season – the ultimate calm head in a tough situation.

Giggs is integral to Manchester United and is surely a United manager in waiting. He’ll get three years under Louis and then be asked to take the reigns. But it’s such a shame that he has retired as a player as we were hoping he might do a Stanley Matthews and play on into his 50s. If anyone could do it in the frenetic modern game it would be Giggsy.
