Arsenal fans have heard such rumours many times before and some would opine that it is a simply smoke screen to appease the growing mass of dissenting voices.
But the latest news cycle brings speculation about Arsenal holding on to embattled manager Arsene Wenger for yet another season.
British media outlet, The Mirror, reports:
Crumbling Arsenal plan massive £200m summer transfer spree and will trust under-fire Arsene Wenger to spend it
It seems natural and right that Arsenal should call time on the career of Wenger at the end of this season. He has been a superb ambassador and manager of the club but he has seemingly given all he can to the cause over his 20 years.
Surely now a fresh approach is needed in order to take Arsenal to the next level but Wenger is perhaps too close to the situation to see it. He loves the club too much to let go.
The wide ranging report suggests very optimistically that with their transfer kitty Arsenal will splurge on a keeper, two defenders, a midfielder, two wingers and a striker! The source states that Lyon and France striker Alexandre Lacazette is at the top of their wish list.
Some of the funds may come from the sales of Olivier Giroud, David Ospina and Mesut Ozil who have become frustrated with life at Arsenal under the Frenchman, according to the report.
If the overhaul actually happens Arsenal fans may be happy enough to let Wenger enjoy another swan song at the club. But there is a sense that this is just another hollow idea that may never come to pass at a club which tends towards thriftiness.
