Manchester United source gives winger update – report

Manchester United winger and utility man Ashley Young looks likely to stay at the club for the remainder of the season at least according to The Daily Mail.

They report:

JACK GAUGHAN: Sounding very much like Ashley Young will be staying at Manchester United today. One club source says they’d be very surprised by any ins or outs.

There has been a lot of speculation about the winger leaving Manchester United this window and Jose Mourinho has made it clear that he would prefer the 31-year-old to stay and fight for his place at Old Trafford.

He said:

“The only player that I am aware of a possibility to leave, and I am waiting for January 31 to know what is going on, is Ashley Young,” Mourinho said.

“[He is] a player I would love to keep.

“I am not happy if he leaves, but he is the only player that I am informed has a possibility of leaving.

Young has been a really important utility player for Manchester United over the years.

Signed by Sir Alex Ferguson in 2011 he has played 150 times for the club and scored 14 goals. He was never the most convincing or popular winger when he played his early days at United in the front line.

But his value has been more obvious when he has been asked to fill other roles in the side. His adaptability has been key to his longevity at the club and perhaps Mourinho feels the same way about him.

Although Manchester United have good options for the left wing, Young can also do a job on either side of the defence. His professionalism and work rate make him a useful member of the squad.

But TFF feels that, unless he shows unbelievable form in the second half of the season, he will be off in the summer to play out his career with more regular minutes at a smaller club.
