In what has to qualify as the strangest transfer rumour of the summer so far, Manchester United have been linked with a sensational move for their former winger Nani.

Shock Manchester United transfer report: Jose Mourinho interested in bringing Luis Nani back to Old Trafford

The news comes form DHA which is apparently a big media outlet in Turkey.

Nani left Manchester United on loan in 2014 and spent the season at his old club Sporting, where he rediscovered some form and hit 12 goals in 38 games.

He has repeated the trick in Turkey where he has scored 12 in 46 for his new club Fenerbahce – the club where ex-Red Robin van Persie also plies his trade these days.

Nani, who reportedly has a release clause of £6.3m, spent 8 seasons at Manchester United playing 230 games and hitting 40 goals. But he never really hit the heights on a regular basis and consistency was his biggest problem. He could amaze and frustrate in equal measure, but he ended up being much more annoying than inspiring in TFF’s view.

However, when you look at the boxes that Nani does tick for a manager like Jose, then the move may not seem quite so outlandish.

He is a fantastic athlete with a great engine and someone who would be happy to track back as a wide man in Mourinho’s preferred 4-2-3-1 formation.

And he still has the sort of pace to get behind defenders in a way that Antonio Valencia, for example, doesn’t.

Manchester United fans want their club to sign the best in the world this summer but expectations may have to be managed with United not in The Champions League. So, while the rumour does seem strange, it’s not impossible to imagine Nani back at Manchester United.

United supporters: Is Nani a waste of space or would he be worth another look in the current circumstances?
