Juan Mata seems to us to be one of the more popular players at Manchester United.
Certainly his public persona is that of a man of humility and compassion for his team mates and the wider world – it’s a refreshing characteristic in a football world that has officially gone mad as money has utterly swamped the game.
And the news that his Spanish team mate, David de Gea, has rather surprisingly signed a new contact at Manchester United, has brought obvious joy to the diminutive playmaker. The hashtag ‘DaveStays’ has been doing the rounds to signal the deal for De Gea and Mata felt compelled to get involved.
De Gea looked, for all the world, that he would complete a move to Real Madrid this summer.
But, in one of the most well-documented moves of the window, administration oversights seemingly put an end to the transfer at the last.
And De Gea has given Manchester United a huge boost by signing a new four year contract at the club today, with an option to extend to 5.
Whether he will stay for that period remains to be seen. But the benefits are twofold for Manchester United.
Firstly they have a world class keeper in goal once more, after Sergio Romero has looked weak in the early games of the season.
And secondly, even if Manchester United do now sell, they will almost certainly get a big fee for the Manchester United Player of The Year.
So it’s very much a reason for Mata and the Manchester United faithful to rejoice.
And, judging by his Tweet, few are happier about the events than United’s number 8.
