Barcelona want to sign precocious midfielder but so do rivals

Barcelona have long been planning the succession to the thrones of Andres Iniesta and Xavi with the likes of Andre Gomes and Ivan Rakitic coming in and doing good jobs over the last few years.

But they will continue to attempt to rediscover the magic of that legendary pairing in the transfer market and are being regularly linked with a move for a brilliant youngster.

British media outlet, The Sun, reports:

ON WEIG ALERT Barcelona and Manchester City to go head-to-head in pursuit of highly-rated Julian Weigl, who Pep Guardiola is ‘in love with’

Such has been the form of Weigl that, at just 21 years of age, he’s forced his way into the Germany international set up with four games since his debut earlier this year for the world champions.

After a spell at 1860 Munich he broke into the Borussia Dortmund team last season and was remarkably consistent with 51 appearances for the club in his breakthrough campaign.

He started this term where he left off last with 14 appearances and a solitary goal in this campaign.

It is obvious that a player of this talent is going to draw interest from the elite clubs in European football. Like Atletico Madrid, Borussia plays in the upper echelons of the game but don’t have the budget of the biggest clubs. Money talks and Dortmund could be vulnerable to a Barcelona bid.

Barcelona fans: would he be a top signing and would he have any chance of getting into the firs tXI at this stage of his career?
