Manchester United could abandon plans to sign for South American duo

After signing Paul Pogba for so much money in the summer Manchester United made another statement of intent and few would be surprised if they went after even bigger names in the game as they attempt to once more scale the peaks of European football.

But latest reports suggest that their bids for two of the top South Americans in the game could be scuppered.

British media outlet, The Sun, reports:

Club accept defeat to rivals Manchester City in race for Lionel Messi… if he was to ever leave Barcelona

There has been speculation this week that Messi may see out his contract at Barcelona before moving on. And TFF would imagine that Pep Guardiola and Manchester City would be at the head of the queue for that transfer should it happen. The pair had great success together when Pep managed Barcelona.

In other news, a more realistic target could be beyond the reach of Manchester United too – at least in the short term.

The Manchester Evening News, who tends to have an ear close to the ground on all things Manchester United, reports:

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho may be forced to shelve a bid for Monaco full-back Fabinho because of the French side’s Champions League success.

Monaco have been a team reborn this season, with ex-Manchester United star Radamel Falcao back to goalscoring ways.

And, to continue this run of form, the implication is that the brilliant Brazilian will be asked to stay at the club until the summer at least.

Let’s see some of the better moments of Fabinho for club and country. Manchester United fans: would this be the best solution for the right back slot? And should United wait to do the deal instead of looking elsewhere?
